Historical Background

SPAT was founded in 1996, following the work developed by a Research Group organized in 1994. Its founding members are: João de Azevedo e Silva, Psychiatrist, Groupanalyst and Psychoanalyst, President of the Scientific Council; Ruy de Carvalho, Medical Doctor, Art-Psychotherapist with groupanalytical training, Vice-President of the Scientific Council (organizer of SPAT’s structure), Helena Correia, Psychiatrist, Art-Psychotherapist with groupanalytical training. The Scientific Council also integrates Joaquim Custódio, Psychiatrist, Art-Psychotherapist, with groupanalytical training and Master of Sofrology, Ana Claudio, Anthropologist, Teacher and Art-Psychotherapist and Susana Catarino, Psychologist and Art-Psychotherapist. The founding membership of SPAT is composed by psychotherapists with more than 10 years of practice, meaning more than 10 000 of clinical hours.
Through its existence, SPAT has led a dynamic role in various domains: Each year training actions are organized for art therapists and art psychotherapists, where more than one hundred of trainees have attended on a regular basis. Since 2000 the Portuguese Congress on Art Therapy is organized, where more than 200 professionals from several fields participate annually. These initiatives from SPAT have welcomed tenths of foreign art-therapists of which we highlight: Guy Roux (President of S.I.P.E., France), R. Pandelon (External Relations Secretary of S.I.P.E., France), Professor Diane Waller (Vice-President of S.I.P.E., UK), Caroline Case (UK) Jennifer Mackewenn (UK), Professor Hartmut Kapteina (Germany), Professor Selma Ciornai (São Paulo, Brazil), Master Ângela Philippini (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Otília Rosângela Souza (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), among many others. SPAT therefore accumulates thousands of hours of training in Art Therapy.
Several international contacts have been made and SPAT has been invited to events in the UK, France and Brazil. Such has allowed SPAT to be recognised and validated by foreign art therapists, namely Gerry McNeilly (art therapist and groupanalyst in the UK, originator of the Art Therapy Goupanalytical Model) which is currently an Honorary Member and Title-Holder of SPAT. Furthermore, SPAT is a member of the International Society for the Psychopathology of Expression and Art Therapy and a recognised training institution by DGERT.
At national level several contacts were also made and led to the invitation of various SPAT representatives in multiple scientific events.
At a clinical level SPAT is a pioneer in Portugal regarding institutional intervention with the long-term sick in statutory care among others. Such has allowed the celebration of protocols with the Miguel Bombarda Hospital, the Pedopsychiatric Service of the Barreiro Hospital, the Association of Teachers of Visual Expression and Communication, Parque Clinic from the Pedopsychiatric Department of the Dona Estefânia Hospital, O Século Foundation, Escola das Brincadeiras – Therapeutic Office for the Development and Learning of the São João do Estoril School. Besides these institutions, art-therapists members of SPAT have developed interventions in other settings such as the Tires and Lisbon Prisons.
In 2006 SPAT undertakes art therapy training actions in Lisbon and Porto.
